Employees Who Listen to Amazon Alexa Requests Can Access Customers' Home Addresses

Earlier this month, Bloomberg shared details on the thousands of employees that Amazon employs around the world to listen to voice recordings captured in the homes of Amazon Echo owners when the Alexa wake word is spoken, with the purpose of improving the service.

There was some concerning information in the report, including employee access to private recordings, recordings that are upsetting or potentially criminal, and an employee tendency to share private recordings in group work chat environments. As it turns out, there's something Alexa owners should be even more worried about -- some of these employees have access to the home addresses of Amazon customers.

In a new report on the team Amazon employs to listen to Amazon Echo recordings, Bloomberg says that employees have access to location data and can "easily find a customer's home address" by typing geographic coordinates into third-party mapping software. The new information was shared by five anonymous Amazon employees who spoke to Bloomberg.

Team members with access to Alexa users' geographic coordinates can easily type them into third-party mapping software and find home residences, according to the employees, who signed nondisclosure agreements barring them from speaking publicly about the program.

While there's no indication Amazon employees with access to the data have attempted to track down individual users, two members of the Alexa team expressed concern to Bloomberg that Amazon was granting unnecessarily broad access to customer data that would make it easy to identify a device's owner.

Bloomberg saw a demonstration where an Amazon team member pasted a user's coordinates (stored on Amazon's servers as latitude and longitude) into Google Maps, finding the address for the user linked to the recording in less than a minute. It's not clear how many people are able to access that system, though two Amazon employees said that until recently, the "vast majority" of workers in the Alexa Data Services group could use the software.

Certain employees on the data team listening to recordings have access to home and work addresses for customers along with phone numbers and access to their contacts if the person has chosen to share contacts with Alexa, all for the purpose of improving requests.

That employees can access specific location data for an individual customer is concerning because after the original report, Amazon had this to say: "Employees do not have direct access to information that can identify the person or account as part of this workflow."

In a new statement provided to Bloomberg, Amazon said something different, calling access to internal tools "highly controlled."

In a new statement responding to this story, Amazon said "access to internal tools is highly controlled, and is only granted to a limited number of employees who require these tools to train and improve the service by processing an extremely small sample of interactions. Our policies strictly prohibit employee access to or use of customer data for any other reason, and we have a zero tolerance policy for abuse of our systems. We regularly audit employee access to internal tools and limit access whenever and wherever possible."

Amazon, says Bloomberg, appears to be restricting the level of access that employees have to sensitive customer data, and after the original story, some of the workers who transcribe and annotate audio recordings no longer had access to software tools they had previously used.

Alexa users concerned with the data that's being collected and used by Amazon should make sure to enable all privacy features and uncheck the option for letting Amazon save Echo recordings. Also Read:12 Best Alluc Alternatives Letting You Stream Movies and More in 2019

How to Download Snapchat Stories on iPhone

While Instagram is the one getting most attention right now, Snapchat still rules a niche. If you’re a diligent Snapchat user and you use it to share specific parts of your life, or if you follow influencers whose posts you want to save on your iPhone, check out the following ways to download Snapchat Stories. Just remember that Snapchat will notify the user that you’ve saved their story.
Download Snapchat Stories on iPhone
Just Take a Screenshot

The easiest way to download a photo from Snapchat? Just tap and hold on the screen to remove the poster’s name and then press the button combination to take the screenshot. The photo will then be available in your Camera Roll.

Of course, When a user goes to the Snapchat Story statistics, they’ll be able to see who took a screenshot. And if the snap was sent to you in private chat, the chat itself will show that you took a screenshot.
Use Screen Recording

You can use the native screen recording to record a video snap. But again, the user will be notified about it, either in the chat thread or in the snap stats.

But it’s the best way to record a video snap. First, you’ll need to enable the screen recording feature.

Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to Control Center -> Customize Controls. Here, add the Screen Recording control.

Step 2: Open the Snapchat app and access the Control Center. Now tap and hold on the Screen Recording toggle and tap on Start Recording. In three seconds it will start recording the screen.

Step 3: Now open the snap you want, let it play, then tap on the Red bar at the top to stop the recording. The video will be saved in the Camera Roll. you can edit it to just the part with the snap video.
Take a Picture of The Screen

If you want to save a still picture you can just take a photo of the snap that’s on your screen with another device. This is the safest way to take a photo without notifying the user that you have saved the snap.
Use QuickTime Recording on Your Mac (No Notification)

You can also use the QuickTime player on your Mac to record a video of the Snapchat app’s screen. This way the Snapchat user won’t be notified (it works for both public stories and videos sent in private chat).

Step 1: Connect your iPhone to your Mac.

Step 2: Open QuickTime on your Mac.

Step 3: From the menu bar, click on File > New Movie Recording.

Step 4: Click on the arrow button next to the Record button and switch the source to your iPhone.

Step 5: Now click on the Record button and then open the snap in question. Once done, click on the Record button again to stop the recording.

Step 6: You can save the video now and edit it down if you want.

How Do You Save Stories on Snapchat

As we’re talking about the iPhone, these are the only options available. Third party tools and apps for saving snapchat are not available on the App Store.

How do you save stories from Snapchat to your iPhone? If we’ve missed out on a reliable method, share with us in the comments below.Gihosoft RePicvid Free Photo Recovery Software provides a free photo recovery software for windows to help users recover the deleted or lost photo for free.

How to Change or Reset Your Apple ID Password

Your Apple ID account is used for so many things you can do with Apple devices and services, such as shop on the iTunes Store, sign in to iCloud, buy apps on the App Store, and more.

If you forget your Apple ID password, all is not lost. Apple has a website that you can use to manage your Apple ID and reset your password at appleid.apple.com. The rest of this article shows you how you can also perform steps on your Mac and iOS devices to reset your password and regain access to your account. You can use these steps if you just want to change your password to something else for security reasons, too.

Before we go on, it's important to note that the following steps for Mac and iOS assume you have two-factor authentication enabled for your Apple ID. If you don't have 2FA enabled, click these corresponding links to take you to the section explaining how to reset your Apple ID password if you're using SMS-based two-factor verification, or if you have email, password and security questions set up for your account.

What if You Forgot Your Apple ID?

To reset your password, you need to know the email address for your Apple ID. If you've forgotten it, there are a few ways to find it on your Mac. One way is to click the Apple () symbol in the top left corner of your Mac's screen, select System Preferences..., then click iCloud. Assuming you're logged in to iCloud, you should see your email address below your name.

Another way is to open iTunes, then choose Account -> View My Account. If you're signed in to iTunes with your Apple ID, you'll see your account name and email address. Alternatively, open the App Store, then select Store -> View My Account and check for your email. If that doesn't help, open Messages, then select Messages -> Preferencesand click Accounts, and see if it shows up there.

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can find out your Apple ID by launching the Settings app and tapping your name in the banner at the top. Alternatively, again in Settings, tap iTunes & App Stores to see the email address associated with your Apple ID.

If those attempts get you nowhere, you can look up your Apple ID on Apple's website. Enter your first name, last name, and email address in the fields. If you enter the wrong email address, you can try again with a different one.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password Using an iOS Device

The following steps apply for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch with iOS 10 and later installed.

Launch the Settings app on your iOS device.

Tap your name in the banner at the top.

Tap Password & Security.

Tap Change Password, and then follow the onscreen prompts. Apple ID passwords require a minimum of eight characters, a number, a lowercase letter, and an uppercase letter.

If you don't see your name in the main banner at the top of the Settings menu, you're likely not signed in to iCloud. In that case, tap Sign in to your [device], then tap Don’t have an Apple ID or forgot it and follow the onscreen steps.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on Mac

Click the Apple () symbol in the top left corner of your Mac's screen and select System Preferences....

Click iCloud in the preference pane.

Click Account Details under your user profile picture.

If you're asked to enter your Apple ID password, click Forgot Apple ID or password and follow the onscreen instructions. You can then skip the remaining steps below.

Click the Security tab.

Click Change Password.

Enter the password you use to unlock your Mac, then click OK.

Enter your new password, then enter it again to verify. Remember, it must be at least eight characters long and include a number, a lowercase letter, and an uppercase letter.

Click Change.

Click Done to finish.
Reset Password Using Email, Password, and Security Questions on the Web

If you don't have an iPhone or Mac handy or need to use someone else's device, you can use the Safari web browser on any computer, tablet, or smartphone to reset your password.

Open a web browser and navigate to https://appleid.apple.com.

Click Forgot Apple ID or password.

Select the option to reset your password, then click Continue.

From here you can choose to Answer security questions or Get an email or Enter your phone number. Answer the questions, or follow the directions in the email you receive.

Note that after you reset your password, you'll be asked to sign in again on the site – and on your devices – with your new password.

Reset Password Using Two-Step Verification

Open a web browser and navigate to https://appleid.apple.com.

Click Forgot Apple ID or password.

Enter your Apple ID, select the option to reset your password, then click Continue.

Enter your Recovery Key.

Choose a trusted device from the list on which to receive the verification code.

Enter the verification code, then create a new password.

Select Reset Password.

Note that after you reset your password, you'll be asked to sign in again on the site – and on your devices – with your new password.Sponsor ads:

Apple Hires Notable VR Leader, Arthur van Hoff

One of the most oft-rumored new products coming down the line from Apple is a pair of augmented reality/virtual reality glasses. And while it’s no secret Apple’s chief executive loves AR, the company’s track record for new hires does seem to point to a new hardware push in the future. Take, for example, the newest hire for Apple: Arthur van Hoff.

van Hoff has had a longstanding relationship with virtual reality, having served as the founding chief technical officer at the Disney-backed Jaunt VR. van Hoff founded Jaunt in 2013, and was working to build the brand as a way to enjoy a cinematic VR experience. It developed its own high-end camera, and even a distribution platform for VR content. However, a lagging VR market led to Jaunt letting go a lot of its employees in October of last year.

Many of those former Jaunt engineers work with Apple. And now van Hoff can be tagged as an Apple employee. Variety has the report this week, noting that van Hoff updated his official LinkedIn page to reflect joining Apple recently. At the time of publication, while it’s known that van Hoff filled a senior architect position, it’s not known what van Hoff will be working on, exactly, at Apple.

However, the safe bet is that it will have something to do with Apple’s rumored AR glasses. Those are rumored to launch sometime in 2020, and could feature a pair of 8K displays. We recently saw a concept look at what the AR glasses could look like, but the rumor mill and leaks have been pretty thin as of late in that regard.
Our Take

This is another big hire for Apple in this space. There is no doubt whatsoever that AR is still a big push for the company, and these hires just prove that. Of course, whether or not the product Apple is developing will be worthwhile still remains to be seen.

Netflix App for iOS No Longer Supports AirPlay Because of 'Technical Limitations' [Updated With Netflix Statement]

The Netflix app for iPhone and iPad no longer appears to support AirPlay, based on an updated support document found on the Netflix website.

According to Netflix, AirPlay is no longer supported on iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch due to "technical limitations." There are no details from Netflix on what those technical limitations might be.

Several MacRumors readers have attempted to use AirPlay with the Netflix app over the course of the last few days and have run into issues doing so from the Netflix app.

AirPlay can still be initiated using the Control Center on an iOS device, but when attempting to test the feature, we were unable to get Netflix content to play and received an error message.

It's not clear why AirPlay support has been removed from the Netflix app. The feature has been available since 2013 and it was working up until this week.

Netflix apps are available on the Apple TV, consoles, smart TVs, iOS devices, and more, so there's not a real need to use AirPlay to watch Netflix content, but there were instances where it was convenient to use.

Netflix has in recent months been making efforts to better protect its content. In December, Netflix stopped allowing customers to sign up for Netflix within the iOS app, and Netflix has never opted to participate in Apple's TV app, making it unavailable in the "Up Next" feature of Watch Now.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings recently confirmed that Netflix had no plans to be a part ofApple's TV plans and said that Netflix isn't interested in offering its content in alternate ways. "We want to have people watch our shows on our services," he said.

Update: A Netflix spokesperson provided further explanation on the company's decision to discontinue support for AirPlay on iOS devices, attributing it to the rollout of AirPlaysupport on third party devices and an inability to distinguish between them:

"We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn't a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn't) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices."Sponsor ads:

NHL iOS App Adds CarPlay Support Ahead of 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs

In one week, on Wednesday, April 10, the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs will kick off. Leading up to that big day, the official NHL iOS app has been updated to prepare, including adding CarPlay support so you won’t miss any of the action.

This week, the NHL iOS app was officially updated to 10.3.0. As noted in the changelog, the update is meant specifically to prepare for the incoming 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which, as mentioned above, start next week. The biggest new addition to the app is CarPlay support, which, frankly, has been an overdue addition for quite some time. Now, in supported automobiles, NHL fans will be able to listen to the games they want to tune into more easily.

There are some other tweaks to the formula, which you can see in the changelog below:

We’re getting ready for the 2019 NHL® Stanley Cup Playoffs. Here’s what’s new in the latest release:Introducing Apple CarPlay! In compatible vehicles you’ll be able to listen to your favorite team’s games on the go

On team pages, we moved pregame and postgame ticket, video, and article links higher up in the scoreboard view

We’ve fixed a bug that prohibited users on newer iPhone X models from changing their App icon to their favorite team’s logo

Other various bug fixes and performance enhancements

The NHL iOS app is a free download, but it does offer in-app purchases, including access to NHL.tv to watch out-of-market games (and games that aren’t nationally televised). However, it is worth noting that once the Stanley Cup Playoffs actually start, the majority (if not all) of the games will be nationally broadcast on NBC channels, including NBC Sports, so just be aware of that if you do plan on watching games.

You can find a link to download the NHL app, now with CarPlay support, below.

When it comes to the NHL and Apple, the two have a pretty kosher relationship. The company has tapped the hockey league to promote its “Shot on iPhone” marketing effort, with some pretty great results. And the league recently picked up brand new iPad Pro units, with a new custom app, to keep behind the benches.
Our Take

CarPlay support is a welcomed addition, and while this is probably a feature that should have been included for quite a while now, it’s better late than never. Especially in time for this year’s Playoffs, which will definitely be fun to watch.
We Want To Hear From You
If you watch the NHL, who do you have winning the Stanley Cup this year? Think the Tampa Bay Lightning have what it takes to make their ridiculously good regular season stretch into the postseason?

How to Use the Home App to Control HomeKit Devices

How to Use the Home App to Control HomeKit Devices

The Home app is what allows you to easily control your HomeKit-compatible devices using your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. You can use the app to do everything from turning on smart lights or adjusting a smart thermostat to opening and closing automated window shades.

Before you start with the app, make sure the smart accessory that you want to use with it is HomeKit-enabled. If your smart product has the label "Works with Apple HomeKit" on the product packaging, you can add it as an accessory in the Home app. If you're still not sure, see Apple's regularly updated list of compatible devices on its website.

Adding an accessory to your smart home setup is fairly straightforward, but there are a few areas where it's not entirely intuitive, so check out our article about adding accessories for more.

Once you've added your devices to the Home app, you can edit the information for them on your iOS device or Mac. On your iPhone or iPad, press and hold an accessory, then tap Settings. On your Mac, double-click the accessory, then click Settings.

From this screen, you can change the accessory's name and the room in which it's located, and you can group the device with other accessories. You can also add the device to your Favorites to access and control it in Control Center, the Home tab, and on your Apple Watch.

To turn a HomeKit accessory on or off using the Home app, simply tap the device (or click it on Mac). To adjust additional device settings, like light bulb brightness for instance, press and hold (or double-click on Mac) instead. You can also create scenes to activate multiple accessories in one go, and even share access to your HomeKit devices with others.

In addition, you can use Siri to turn on and control your devices. The Siri commands you use will obviously depend on the type of accessory, but a couple of examples might be "Turn on the living room light" or "Open the garage door," or you could ask Siri to check the temperature of a thermostat, for example. You can find more information about using Siri to control HomeKit accessories by clicking here. Sponsor ads:
